Team up!

For many patients dental therapy is associated with pain, discomfort, as well as time-consuming and expensive activity. In case of numerous problems in the mouth, the scope of the activities required may cause additionally fear and discourage caused by dentist visit. In this case, the solution may be a team treatment says dr. med. Agnieszka Laskus, a dentist.

Editor: The fear of visiting a dental office appears in our childhood. We are mostly scared about long-lasting pain, right?

Dr. Laskus: Yes, most patients have fears associated with a dentist’s visit in childhood. Often we do not realize that these fears are completely irrational, because the current medical solutions are able to completely eliminate the pain of dental treatment. There are also measures that affect the level of anxiety and allow patients greater comfort. In addition to pharmacological drugs, we can offer interdisciplinary treatments for patients with various oral disorders. Besides eliminating pain and anxiety, they are also significant way to save time or money.

Editor: Sounds good, but what is the treatment like?

Dr. Laskus: Interdisciplinary treatment, also known as team treatment, is based on the cooperation of doctors of various specialties. Therapy is based on a plan for the treatment of health conditions, including a holistic view of the body as a unity. The aim of such treatments is to completely cure the patient in the shortest possible time, with possibly minimized stress and suffering.

Editor: In which cases can we use this solution?

Dr. Laskus: Team treatment in dentistry is used, among others, in orthodontics, implantology or periodontology. If we want to correct the teeth layout by moving them, often before putting on the retainer, we have to undergo periodontal surgery. They are aimed at curing periodontal diseases (gums, ligaments, bones around the teeth). After strengthening structures surrounding the teeth, further effective orthodontic or prosthetic treatment is possible, which will have results in long-lasting treatment. In the treatment of masticatory system disorders, surgical procedures are carried out, which support orthodontic treatment (extraction treatment, insertion of retained teeth, removal of wisdom tooth buds, treatment of temporomandibular joint stiffness, treatment of gnatal defects of the jaw and mandible, etc.).

In the case of surgical and implantological treatment, it is possible to combine the effort of a surgeon, laryngologist and dentist-prosthetist and perform treatments at the same time thanks to cooperation with an anaesthesiologist. In this way, we can remove the tooth in one procedure and immediately fill the gap with an implant using various regenerative techniques (thanks to the latest generation materials) or in connection with implantological treatment, raise the maxillary sinus after previous sinus endoscopy or perform nasal septum plasty. The use of general anesthesia reduces the number of visits to doctors and shortens the time of treatment. Less complex treatments may be performed in sedation or only with anesthetic assistance through administration of anxiolytic drugs.

Team treatment using general anesthesia is also the only possible solution in some specyfic cases. It is used even for people with intellectual disabilities who are not willing to cooperate with the doctor, as well as children who react with severe stress or children with mental immaturity or mental retardation. In this way, we are able to shorten the treatment, which would normally last even several months and thus reduce the stress and suffering of the patient.
