What is periodontics?

The field of dentistry dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal and oral diseases is periodontics. It is worth going to a periodontist when we have problems with gingivitis – also caused by other diseases or complications related to injuries or taking medications, as well as as a result of hormonal disorders.
Another reason for visiting a periodontist’s office may be an unpleasant smell from the mouth or a feeling of disgust, which are not related to digestive system disorders. Periodontology is becoming one of the most socially useful areas of dentistry: it is estimated that problems with periodontitis are declared by as many as 99% of adults, while gingivitis is also common in young people – as many as 75% of adolescents complain of pain and bleeding gums. If the disease is not stopped in time, such symptoms risk losing teeth.

What are the causes of periodontal disease?

The most obvious is the calculus on the teeth, which builds up, presses into the soft tissues and damages them, causing inflammation. In addition, there can be many reasons: avitaminosis, malocclusion, smoking and alcohol abuse, hormonal disorders, diabetes, poorly selected dentures.

What does a periodontist do and what treatments does a periodontologist use?

In the beginning, you always have to remove the stone from your teeth. This procedure is called scaling (currently ultrasonic or laser scaling is used most often). In addition, he performs such procedures as: bone augmentation, i.e. bone regeneration and superstructure; curettage, i.e. cleaning the gingival pockets (closed – without exposing the root or making incisions; open – associated with cleaning the tooth roots) and others.

What does a visit to a periodontist look like?

Just like visiting a dentist of any other specialty: interview, diagnosis, treatment plan and tips for the time between scheduled visits. Of course, the patient should do everything to make these visits only follow-up visits (once every six months). Periodontal disease prevention is also a task for a periodontist.
