Tartar – the causes of its formation and its removal

Tartar is a mineralized plaque that forms on the surface of the teeth. This plaque is formed from the deposition of substances contained in the saliva, bacteria responsible for the formation of caries and their metabolic products, calcium compounds, phosphorus and food leftovers. Deposits can be present on all tooth surfaces difficult to clean. It should be remembered that the stone is not always visible. Scale could be supragingival, usually in yellow color, which darkens under the influence of tea wine or tobacco smoke and subgingival, which usually has a dark shade caused by the breakdown of blood, which is caused by inflammation of the gums and other periodontal structures. Tartar removal involves the professional treatment of teeth by a doctor or hygienist – it consists of manual scaling, ultrasonic scaling, polishing (popularly known as dental sandblasting). At the same time, the patient is presented with a professional oral hygiene instruction enabling the continuation of hygienization at home and self-control. Such treatment should be carried out regularly every six months or every four months for patients with periodontitis.
