Third molar teeth, populary known as eights or wisdom teeth, are a remnant of our ancient ancestors. Their presence is innate, but generally disappearing in the process of evolution. Not all of them can be eights, it depends on whether we have their buds. Usually, a man has four wisdom teeth, which are appearing in adulthood, usually between 17 and 21 years old, but oftten the process of growing may last a lot longer.
We usually associate wisdom teeth with accompanying symptoms, such as pain or gum sensitivity when teeth growing. In some people the appearance of eights proceeds without major problems, but in many people the appearance of additional molars may result in the occurrence of, among others, inflammation, caries or even malocclusion.
The decision to retain or remove windsom teeth is made by the dentist based on the patient’s interview, the radiological and clinical picture and the individual clinical situation. If the wisdom teeth are correctly positioned in relation to other teeth, they are not covered by caries or periodontal disease and do not cause pain in maintaining hygiene, there is no reason to remove them. However, in situations when due to eights problems start, such as caries and its complications, inflammation of the gums, movement of the remaining teeth or a malocclusion, the dentist decides on the surgical removal of the teeth of wisdom.
